Successfully smashed a hole through a pane of glass, using a hammer and nail, and an old photo frame.
What does it mean to destroy something? and in this case glue the pieces together, as well as keep it in its frame, it creates this bizarre quite intriguing object. Where it is questioned how it was created and why, also questioning its value as an art piece, being in a frame and on a wall does that then make it art, does the act of destroying it and hanging it then make it an art piece. Or does it gain value being this object which is unusable for its original purpose as a photo frame. The act of trying to fix something which has broken has been done many times before, and reminds me of the Japanese art form Kintsugi, where they repair pottery using gold, making it more valuable. It also reminds me of Martin Heidegger’s hammer. It also brings associations of the smashing of a window as a kid, or a cracked windowscreen. I find it interesting what the act of destruction does, does it bring about associations to anger and aggression, or misbehaviour? Is destroying something a socially appropriate/acceptable thing to do? The act of destroying art as a part of the work I find interesting too, would people be shocked or thrilled by the idea of it?
I like the idea that it is destroyed yet still held in place, similar to the net that I will rip a hole through it will be suspended yet damaged. The idea of an objects fragility being held is intriguing to me. The smashed ceramics might do something different I’m not sure, perhaps I could also suspend some of those as well, so the objects remains are held in suspension with the remains scattered below. That could also, I think pose the question to the viewers in what happened, to cause this aftermath -the process being hidden from the viewer.
