A mystery is held by the video, where the original source of light is not visible. We only see the refracted blur of light the window projects, and the shadows of something unseen on the wall. An ever present but unseen presence. The shadows cast, perhaps by some passing storm, creates a mesmerizing display. As Ann Veronica Janssens says ‘I think that sometimes you have to erase reality, erase what is visible in order to see something else, to make the invisible visible’. By not seeing the reality of what is there, you see something else, you are able to appreciate the light for its reflective qualities.
Light refraction is something which is often overlooked, a phenomenon that we often take for granted. We don’t always pay much attention to the physical nature and subtle beauty of bended light. The videos were recorded at a time of healing and contemplation, watching time pass, and being aware of the changing times. Janssen discusses the concept of serendipity where in ‘times of idleness allow us to observe and discover other phenomenon.’
